The Town of Aqaba is located in Jordan within the Middle
East and along the Gulf of Aqaba in the Red Sea. The project
encompassed 14 miles of coastline and several thousand
feet of streetscape and park spaces. The landscape architect
was hired to develop a series of landscape development
plans for streets, the coastline, parks and public plazas
for the town under the overall project management of Gensler
Architects (Washington, D.C.) The challenge was to incorporate
existing features, respecting the existing culture while
providing a new approach to the design of the landscape.
The landscape architect relied on their knowledge of desert
low water use plant materials as well as native hardscape
materials. The goal was to promote Aqaba as a tourist
destination by focusing on its unique natural and cultural
beauty. The products included designs for the hierarchical
development of streets, park spaces and large public gathering
spaces. This work was conducted while employed with TBG
Partners under the direction of Jim Manskey.
