(Project work conducted at Schmidt Copeland Parker Stevens)
Case Western Reserve is located in Cleveland, Ohio. Case Western Reserve University is located in the University Circle area of Cleveland and is adjacent to several businesses, medical facilities and museums. The project included developing a series of designs for the southern side of a portion of the campus. The challenge was working within the existing parking structure while providing a unique “gateway” entrance to this side of the campus. The designs included dynamic planting statements with large sweeping plantings and a grid of deciduous trees at the corner of the campus. Adjacent to this area, a café space was placed which was accessed from the existing cafeteria. This outdoor space was framed by evergreen and perennial shrubs and groundcovers. A series of brick columns and iron fencing was proposed along the edge of the site to provide definition as well as match existing materials within the campus. The primary entry into the space was designed to feature flowering ornamental trees, seasonal plantings as well as large “gateway” structures leading visitors upwards to the upper levels of the campus. This formal entrance into the campus contained multiple levels of plantings and retaining walls. The design centered on providing a dynamic and memorable impact for campus visitors as well as individuals passing by the campus. This work was conducted while employed with SCPS under the direction of Elizabeth Iszler.
