The Alyene K. Tilley Prayer Garden is located in Washington,
D.C. This prayer garden was developed by the District
of Columbia Baptist Convention Board. The garden is located
on the southern side of the convention boards headquarters
along Sixteenth Street in Washington. The purpose of the
garden is to provide a space for area residents for quiet
prayer and reflection. The challenge of the project was
to provide an inviting design on a limited budget that
was installed completely by volunteers. The landscape
architect proposed that the access into the garden be
through an existing concrete and brick wall that would
connect the prayer garden to an interior courtyard. The
design and installation included this structural change
with the addition of steps connecting the two spaces.
The garden made use of existing trees for shade cover
and supplemented these trees with an understory planting
of Kousa Dogwood trees. The foundation planting was crimson
pygmy and red truhedge barberry with blue star juniper
in the foreground. The lawn area was divided with gravel
paths ending in three separate and private flagstone patio
areas for seating. English ivy was planted at the base
of the concrete wall to ultimately provide a solid green
background for the garden. The landscape architect provided
design development drawings, cost estimation as well as
managing the purchase of all materials and the installation
by 30 volunteers in one day. |
