Children’s Medical Center Legacy is a specialty hospital devoted to the care of children to be located on the 69 acres at the corner of Hedgcoxe and Preston Roads in Plano, Texas. Studio Tincup was asked to provide the landscape architecture consulting services during the interview process with Ascension Group Architects. During the process, Studio Tincup developed a masterplan illustrating preliminary ideas generated for the site layout and landscape design. The masterplan was presented at the shortlist interview. Even though the team was not ultimately awarded the project, Studio Tincup’s work serves as an example of creative solutions for spaces designed for a large specialty children’s hospital. The masterplan concept centered upon the preservation of an existing 48” caliper Live Oak. This oak was termed the “Tree of Life”. The Tree of Life was connected via a “Garden Promenade” to and thru the hospital and ultimately linked to a series of garden spaces. These garden spaces included three distinctly different garden experiences for children and included: The Children’s Sculpture Garden, The Labyrinth Garden, and the Sensory Garden. The site also featured a meditation point separated from the main building with and area for reflection and solace. The landscape design included a ‘Great Lawn’ where public gatherings and events could occur directly adjacent to a lakeside terrace and pedestrian overlook. The entire property is connected by a trail system linking the Children’s Medical Center with other properties within the Legacy Development.
