ICOMOS – Landscape Conservation Management Plan - Dame Eadith Walker -‘Yaralla’ and The Thomas Walker Convalescent Center (Project work conducted at New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service – Sydney Australia)

‘Yaralla’ and The Thomas Walker Convalescent Center are two mid 1800’s estates located on the Parramatta River in Sydney Australia. This project was conducted with the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service, which is part of the Department of Environment and Conservation - the main government conservation agency in New South Wales, Australia. The project was conducted by the landscape architect while involved in a postgraduate internship for the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS). The project consisted of producing a Landscape Conservation Management Plan for these two estates. These management plans were done in order to provide a guideline for preservation and management. In addition, at the time of this project Sydney was preparing for the Olympic Games. The trail system designed at the edge of these estates was part of the “Greening of the Parramatta River” initiative in preparation for the Olympics. The project included conducting historical overviews of the site. Cultural landscape condition assessments were developed. These were based on a combination of the United States Cultural Landscape Inventory process as well as the Conservation Heritage and Conservation Management Planning process used in Australia. From the historical overview and the current landscape assessment, a Statement of Significance was formulated for each site.
