(Project work conducted at the National Park Service and University of Arizona)
Aztec Ruins National Monument is located near Aztec New
Mexico near the four borders of Utah, Arizona, Colorado
and New Mexico. This national monument, which is approximately
27 acres, is located within the Animas Valley and contains
the Anasazi ruins. The landscape architect along with
her colleagues documented the cultural landscape surrounding
the Anasazi Ruins. The archaeological sites provide evidence
of occupation at the site by members of the Chacoan and
Mesa Verdean traditions of the Anasazi culture, which
built on site in the 12th and 13th centuries. Three major
existing ruins on site are the most obvious signs of their
habitation. Remnants of terraced fields, roadways and
various development and use areas are found throughout
the landscape. The project included producing a cultural
landscape report to document the history of the site as
well as the changes within the landscape over time. This
included the documentation of structures, small-scale
features, topography, views and vistas, circulation, cultural
traditions and vegetation. The team utilized The Secretary
of the Interiors Standards for the Treatment of Historic
Properties with Guidelines for the Treatment of Cultural
Landscapes as well as numerous other National Park Service
publications.
